Reddit plans login-only access to protect data and control discovery

Falling referrals are accelerating a shift from open-web reach toward authenticated users and controlled machine access.

Reddit plans to test logged-in-only access in selected non-US markets in the fourth quarter, saying authentication will protect its data corpus, improve advertising signals and raise engagement. The platform says search traffic fell by more than one million referrals per week on average during October and wants less dependence on logged-out web discovery. Closing open access gives Reddit stronger control over machine use and audience signals, but makes a major community knowledge base less available to search and agent intermediaries.

AI Search

Google’s AI summaries hit ad revenue as Reddit loses search referrals

Two different sides of the search market are now reporting financial pressure from answer-first discovery.

Google said AI summaries shown above search results are affecting its core search-ad revenue even as it plans up to $205 billion in annual investment, almost entirely related to AI. Reddit separately warned that Google’s AI-driven search is reducing referral traffic, contributing to a 29% share-price fall after weaker user figures. The same answer layer can squeeze both the gatekeeper’s advertising economics and a community information platform’s audience acquisition, turning AI search from a traffic concern into a measurable commercial risk.

AI Agents

Meta’s Muse powers concert discovery—and highlights a blocking problem for media sites

A concert curator reports billions of weekly tokens for $80, revealing how cheaply an agent can search and classify media across platforms.

The operator of concert service fullsets.fm says Meta’s Muse scans Reddit and YouTube for recordings, discovers channels, matches artists and makes final approve-or-reject decisions in the curation pipeline. He paid $80 for a month and reports using a few billion tokens a week through a managed Chrome environment, although jobs can freeze and the interface remains rough. At that price and scale, browser agents can sharply lower the cost of building media catalogs while pushing source platforms toward tighter controls over automated access.

Reddit tightens Old Reddit access as it closes machine-readable routes into its content

Recent-use rules, an RSS shutdown and the end of the public API narrow who can reach Reddit outside its main interface.

Reddit says Old Reddit will soon be limited to logged-in moderators and accounts that used the interface within the previous six months, after its login requirement reduced but did not stop automated access. It will also end RSS feeds on November 13 and remaining public API access in March 2027, with no replacement for feeds outside communities a user moderates. Together, the controls reduce open distribution paths used by readers, archives and bots, increasing Reddit’s gatekeeping power over community-produced information.

Reddit closes RSS and its public API as AI data access becomes a paid product

The platform is replacing open feeds and APIs with registered access and commercial terms for automated use of its community data.

Reddit will stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13 and end all remaining public API access in March 2027, saying both have become routes for scraping and automated abuse. AI assistants that currently use the API to answer questions will need commercial data deals, while apps must register on Reddit’s developer platform by January 12, 2027. The shift turns one of the web’s largest stores of community knowledge from open machine-readable distribution into a controlled input that Reddit can meter and monetize.
