AI Port of a 1989 Game Shows How Remake Costs Could Fall
A veteran developer’s browser remake put an agentic harness in charge of reverse engineering, code, testing and asset production.
A game-industry veteran reports that a code harness and Qwen-3.8-Flash-Next reverse-engineered the 1989 title War of the Lance and rebuilt it for modern browsers in about a week, with less than four hours of direct human attention. The harness also tested the port through DOSBox-X and Playwright, while generative tools created custom 3D assets for the continuing modernization. If this workflow generalizes, game publishers could exploit back catalogues far more cheaply, while intellectual property and control of distribution become more important sources of value in a flood of low-cost content.
