Bot-streaming fraud diverts $8 million from music royalty pools
Billions of fabricated plays converted automated listening into an $8 million royalty fraud.
A US court sentenced a North Carolina musician to 18 months in prison and ordered him to forfeit $8 million earned through automated streams of largely AI-generated songs. The scheme used as many as 10,000 fake accounts to generate billions of plays across hundreds of thousands of tracks while spreading activity to avoid detection. The case shows that machine audiences can turn streaming metrics into fraudulent payouts, forcing music platforms and rights holders to treat bot detection as core royalty infrastructure.
