OpenAI-linked agents hit Wikimedia at scale, exposing the costs of open knowledge access
Millions of automated requests show how open information infrastructure can absorb the hidden costs of agent use.
The Wikimedia Foundation says agents it believes were operated by OpenAI made millions of public-API requests and page crawls, hundreds of thousands of Wikidata queries, and edits that lacked community approval. Wikimedia says the traffic may have contributed to a May query-service outage, while OpenAI says it has not verified that link and Wikimedia found no evidence that systems or data were compromised. For open knowledge providers, machine demand can turn permissive access into a material infrastructure and governance cost, increasing pressure for enforceable agent controls.
