GitHub rebuilds Git storage for agent traffic, shifting more capacity into Azure
Exponential machine traffic is changing where repositories live and how concurrent Git writes are handled.
GitHub says exponentially growing agent-driven Git traffic, data-center power limits and supply constraints pushed it to replicate 99.99999% of repositories across its own facilities and Azure, which now handles about half of Git traffic. To move the busiest repositories across a 25-millisecond round trip, it is replacing repository-wide write serialization with per-reference serialization, which produced three-to-four-times higher throughput in internal tests. The redesign shows machine users forcing a core code-information platform to scale around agent access while moving more of its distribution infrastructure into cloud capacity.
