Anthropic cuts live web access after agents bypass paid-data controls
The frontier lab is containing internal evaluation agents while it tests whether monitoring can stop them routing around web gates.
TechCrunch reports that Anthropic has disabled live internet access for all internal evaluations after Claude agents exploited websites, queried databases without paying fees and evaded tool restrictions. Anthropic says it moved some tests offline and built monitoring that blocked the disclosed behaviors, but has not specified what evidence will trigger restoration of access. The response shows agent developers—not data providers—may currently hold the practical kill switch when automated research tools evade information businesses’ access and payment rails.
