Firefox adds its own AI layer to keep the browser at the centre of the web

Mozilla’s Mistral-powered Smart Window moves Firefox beyond navigation and into selecting, interpreting and answering from the web.

Mistral models now power Firefox Smart Window, an in-browser assistant that draws on open tabs and web retrieval to make sense of searches without requiring a conventional results page. By putting the assistant inside Firefox, Mozilla is trying to stop the browser from becoming mere infrastructure beneath AI services controlled by other companies. Mozilla has previously tried to strengthen the economics behind the open web: Pocket directed readers to publishers, while Firefox Better Web tested subscriptions distributed according to what users read. Smart Window puts that record to a new test, because Firefox can now answer from cited material before the user reaches the source.
