Google wins dismissal of publisher antitrust suits over AI Overviews
Chegg and Penske argued that staying visible in Google search required accepting AI summaries that diverted visits and revenue.
A U.S. federal judge dismissed antitrust lawsuits from education-information provider Chegg and Rolling Stone publisher Penske Media, which alleged Google forced publishers to accept AI Overviews of their content if they wanted to remain indexed in search. The companies alleged reduced referral traffic and revenue, but the judge held that an expectation of search traffic was not an agreement and said antitrust law cannot substitute for legislation addressing innovation's economic harm; Google denied wrongdoing. The dismissal weakens this antitrust route for challenging an AI answer layer that can reduce publisher referrals, pushing the compensation fight toward legislation and commercial terms.
